Purpose of School Education

Purpose of education may have differed opinions as each teacher has an individual opinion about what the purpose of education should be. Their opinions may vary not only in their classrooms but also in a broad-spectrum. In fact, it is important to identify that other people including the students’ parents and school administrators might have a different point of view concerning the purpose of education for kindergarten, primary and secondary school education.

Here is a list of different aims of education that are espoused by different individuals.

·         Knowledge to Get By

It is an old school belief that the sole purpose of an educational institution is to provide students with the knowledge that they require to get by in their daily lives. They get to learn how to read, write and handle do-to-day calculations. Although these core activities build the foundation of a student’s education, most educators believe that acquiring knowledge should not be the sole purpose of secondary education.

·         Preparing Students as Thoughtful Citizens

Another purpose of education is to prepare the students as thoughtful citizens of the nation. Right from the prep schools, they are taught all necessary lessons so that they will someday be the part of a community. They need to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to function in society.

·         Learning How to Learn

One of the key elements of education is to learn how to learn. During their school days, students are taught how to find information that they will need after leaving school. It means when students learn a specific subject matter, they also need to understand how to find answers for any problems that might arise in future.

·         Gaining Self Esteem and Confidence

Education should make students feel confident about their learning abilities. They are often trained to be confident and gain self-esteem in schools.

·         Teaching Students How to Live

Some individuals also believe in a more holistic purpose of education as it leads them towards living properly for the rest of their lives. Students learn valuable life lessons in and outside the classrooms. They get to know how to deal with others and work cooperatively as a team.
